My Journey in the Reading Science Doctoral Program at MSJ
As I interact with fellow reading science enthusiasts, the number one question I get is about my experience at Mount St. Joseph University. Here is some information about the past three years…
Embarking on this journey to earn my doctorate in reading science from MSJ has been a transformative part of my life. Reflecting on my experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the knowledge I have gained, the community I have become a part of, and the personal growth I have experienced.
The Science of Reading to the Core
This program’s rigorous curriculum and thoughtful structure captivated me from the outset. The courses are meticulously designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the cognitive, linguistic, and social aspects of reading. Each class challenged me to delve deeper into the research, free from the busy work one might encounter in other programs.
The faculty at The Mount are not just educators but mentors and pioneers in the field of reading science. These phenomenal instructors have a deep passion for equipping educators with knowledge from reading science. Their dedication to advancing literacy and their commitment to student success are evident in every lecture, discussion, and assignment. Their guidance has been invaluable, pushing me to think critically and continue growing my reading science knowledge. The faculty list reads like a Who’s Who in Reading Science, and they continue to add knowledgeable reading science advocates to the mix.
Community and Collaboration
One of the most rewarding aspects of the program has been the sense of community. What started as a Zoom meeting of strangers has developed into tight friendships and professional collaborations. The environment fosters dynamic discussions and meaningful exchanges of thoughts and ideas. I have learned so much from the other members of Cohort 1, fondly known as “The Trailblazers,” and from members of the cohorts that joined after us.
Personal and Professional Growth
The journey through the reading science doctoral program has been a perfect mix of personal growth and academic achievement. The challenges and triumphs along the way have honed my problem-solving skills and enhanced my interpersonal communication abilities. Presenting research, leading discussions, and collaborating with peers have contributed to both my personal and professional growth.
Professionally, this program has opened doors to new opportunities to bridge the gap between research and practice. The knowledge and skills I have acquired will continue to serve me as I take on leadership roles in literacy education, contribute to policy development, and drive initiatives that promote reading proficiency for all children.
Looking Ahead
As I navigate my new post-doctorate life, I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. My experiences at Mount St. Joseph University have prepared me to make meaningful contributions to the field of reading science and to positively impact the lives of teachers and students. I am eager to continue this journey, driven by a passion for literacy and a commitment to educational excellence.
